All different types of pneumatic valves

Valves play an important role in controlling actuators. An actuator is a device that receives energy and converts it into motion and force. This can be an air cylinder set in motion.

You can operate a valve in several ways: pneumatic, electric, mechanical, hand- or foot-operated.

What types of valves work on pneumatics?

There are three types of pneumatic valves that operate on pneumatics:

To understand the different types of operation of pneumatic valves, we dive deeper into the construction and operating principle of the above valves.

What is an air operated valve?

Air-operated valves use compressed air as the driving force to switch between different positions. Pneumatic operated valves are available in bistable or monostable with an open center position, closed center position or pressurized center position.

  • What is meant by bistable?

A bistable valve can be permanently switched by a short control signal. Without a signal, the valve remains in the same position. The valve switches again by a control                signal on the other side. Thus, a separate actuator is required for each position.

  • What does monostable mean?

For monostable valves, one actuation is present to switch the valve. These valves must be operated continuously during the changeover time. If the control signal is lost,            the valve switches back to the idle position by spring force.

How do electrically operated valves work?

Electrically operated valves are also called solenoid valves. These valves use current to switch. When current is passed through the electric coil, the magnetic field is generated and sets the valve in motion.

The valve opens and operates directly or indirectly. We also call this:

  • Normally Open (N/O), when the valve is actuated the valve closes and no flow is possible.
  • Normally Closed (N/C), when the valve is actuated the valve opens and flow is possible.

What is a mechanically operated valve?

Mechanically operated valves are operated manually via levers or knobs. This provides precise control and reliability in various applications and industries, such as packaging and industrial processing.

Mechanically operated valves come in a variety of designs:

  • 2/2 valve
  • 3/2 valve
  • 5/2 valve
  • 5/3 valve

Benefits of Pneumatic Valves

Pneumatic valves can switch very quickly, are reliable and simple in design, and easy to modify and expand to fit the needs of an application.
Often overlooked because of their modest size, in reality, valves are one of the most crucial components of a pneumatic system.
Let's not forget that our pneumatic valves are high quality and durable in use. They are made of materials such as aluminum and galvanized steel, which means they can withstand harsh conditions and long-term use.
